Kitchen Island Makeover
When we first moved into our home our kitchen had been recently updated. The old owners moved the refrigerator to open up the dining area and add some open shelving. They also opted for new white with grey flake quartz counter-tops and a large single basin stainless steel sink with matching brushed nickel faucet and cabinet pulls. However, brushed nickel isn’t really our style. These were the cabinet pulls when we moved in.
And these are the cabinet pulls I immediately changed them to.
So much better! I love the large pulls for the drawers and round knobs for the cabinet pulls together! But we were still left with this island and light fixture set up that was too boring and just not my taste! I bought these bar stools hopping to jazz up the area but I still was not satisfied!
So I bought pendant lights hoping they would add enough of the modern farmhouse style I was so desperate to obtain! Best part? They were only $25 a piece!
Super cute! We were getting closer but still weren’t quite there yet! I decided we needed a more dramatic transformation. Cue two-tone cabinets. I had seen it all over Pinterest and just fell in love with the dramatic statement two-tone cabinets made. Looking for something inexpensive and relatively easy to do, I stumbled upon the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transfomations kit! Reading “No Sanding Necessary”, I was sold! But then I wandered into the lumber aisle. I decided what the island needed was ship-lap and wood details on the ends. We purchased 10 1x4x8s for the ship-lap section in the front and some 1x2x8s for the detail work on the ends. Starting with the ends, we cut the 1x2s to frame the side and cut a piece to go across diagonally.
Next we used 1×2 vertically to frame out the long front portion of the island and stacked the 1×4’s one on top of the other to create the ship-lap effect I was looking for.
I then followed the instructions on the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations kit to properly paint, prep, the seal the cabinet faces. This was the result!
Notice all that clutter on those open shelves? I finished off the open shelving with some clutter hiding tension rods and valances (that I already had). Then added an Ikea rod to the other side for some extra storage and decor options.
This added all the character I was looking for at a price that didn’t break the bank! I am so in love with the end result!
Cost Breakdown:
- Pendent Lights $25 x 3 Lights = $75
- Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations Kit $85
- 1×4 $2 x 10 8′ Boards = $20
- 1×2 $3 x 1 8′ Board = $3
- Black Drawer Pulls $5 x 7 = $35
- Black Cabinet Knobs $4 x 19 = $76
Grand Total $294
I should note the Cabinet Transformations kit comes with WAY MORE then I used for this one project. So I was able to transform some other spaces! But you’ll just have to keep following along to see where!
