Sweet Neutral Nursery Reno for a Sweet Baby Girl

When I found out we were expecting ANOTHER little girl, I immediately started planning the nursery! I knew I wanted something calming and serene. Somewhere I could go and snuggle this sweet baby and be able to just relax and feel cozy. After doing my little girls room in pink I knew I didn’t want another pink room but I did want to add a touch of something girly. I ended up with a neutral baby girls nursery with greige walls, a sage green accent wall, and pops of pink for a feminine feel.

I started the room makeover by creating a fresh slate and removed everything from the room including furniture and the fun began!

Ceiling Makeover

We moved the furniture out, and started the first part of the makeover was the ceiling reno. I started by scraping all of the popcorn off the ceiling.

Once the popcorn was all scraped off, I sanded the ceiling. This gets any excess plaster off and created the smoothest ceiling surface.

Then the ceiling got 2 coats of bright white paint. And then we removed the 20 year old yellow smoke detector! Did you know it’s recommended you change your smoke detectors every 10 years?! Neither did I! All of the smoke detectors in our home are original to our home so they’re over 20 years old.

Neutral Walls for Baby Girl

Once the ceiling was smooth and white, I started painting the walls. I used a beautiful creamy greige color called Warm Putty. While painting, I decided I wanted the trim and walls to be the same color so as I went I painted both! I also put up the new white smoke detector.

A Sweet Neutral Accent Wall

Next, I began working on my accent wall. I felt this accent wall was so important when doing a neutral baby girls nursery to add some color and personality. I removed the baseboards because the 1x2s are thicker then the baseboards. In order to prevent overhang, as seen below, I removed the baseboards and planned to use 1x4s instead.

Then I got the sage green base coat on the wall. I found its easiest to get the base coat on the wall first then add your boards.

Once I had 2 coats of paint on the wall I began cutting my boards. I started at the floor and added my baseboard first. I had planned to just use a 1×4 but when I removed the original baseboards I damaged the wall slightly. So I had 3 options

  • Repair the wall – This would involve spackling and sanding until smooth then painting again
  • Save the 1×4 and purchase a 1×6 that would cover the damage
  • Use what I already have on hand and stack a 1×2 on top of the 1×4 I already planned

So I went with the fastest and most frugal option, using what I had on hand. First, I laid the 1×4 using a level and nail gun making sure it was level on the wall. Then, I placed the 1×2 on top and nailed that in. This created a really pretty, thick looking baseboard that hid the slight wall damage. Then I began working on the vertical boards. I started with the very middle of the wall(#1). Then I measured from the middle board to the wall and placed the next boards in the middle of each of those sections(#2). Then I measured the middle of those sections and placed the last 4 boards(#3). See below for the numbered photo showing when each board was laid.

Then I caulked each seam where the boards meet the wall and when that was dry I painted everything green.

Closet Doors

These closet doors were in rough shape cosmetically. They had suffered years of abuse the paint was yellowing and the knobs I attempted to replace didn’t fit right with the included screws so they weren’t snug to the doors. I knew they needed an upgrade or replacement. I loved what I did in my other daughter’s room makeover earlier in the year, so I knew it’d be perfect here too! Beginning with 2 coats of brown paint, when that was dry I layered on stain with a brush then wiped it away with a cloth going with the faux wood grain.

The Final Look of Our Neutral Baby Girls Nursery

Once the closet doors were done I pushed all of the furniture back into place and decorated. I added this target rug and these cute ruffle curtains for a pop of pink! I also created a cozy little nook space for reading/breastfeeding/snuggling with a chair, cozy blanket, and this beautiful floor lamp!
