How To DIY an Indoor Kids Playhouse Cheap

Our girls(mainly our 5 year old) has been begging for a playhouse for a long time! So we decided this Christmas was the year! We set out to find the perfect kids playhouse! I wanted something cute and farmhousey that’d be girly but also match our home! We planned on putting this house in our FRONT yard because we have 4 dogs, 8 chickens, and a pot-belly pig that use our backyard to roam daily. Because it’d be in front of our house it was important to me that it would have curb appeal!

Choosing a Kids Playhouse

If you are looking for the perfect kids playhouse think about the things you look for in YOUR home. I know this sounds silly but things like architecture and square footage make a difference! There are tons of different styles of playhouses out there and I wanted ours to match our littles personalities! We also have 2 littles with tons of cousins and friends that love playing together so space was important to me! All of the ones online were cute but just did not match our homes style. The ones that I did like that matched our style were ridiculously expensive! Then I found this house on Wayfair.

I knew it could work but it’d need a facelift! So I made a plan, ordered the house, and set out to collect supplies to achieve the look I was going for. To transform the house above to this:

Renovating The Playhouse

We needed a few supplies from our local Lowes. Remember, at the beginning of this project we were planning on putting this house outside in front of our house. We purchased:

In terms of everything needed to paint(brushes, rollers, etc.) We already had all of the supplies needed. Our cost will not include those supplies.

We unboxed and took inventory of all the parts. Then we began painting. The roof and windows were painted Tricorn black. We painted the base of the house and all of the smaller house pieces white. I also decided to paint the inside ceiling white to keep it bright inside.

This is the moment I started reevaluating our location. Once all the parts were scattered about the basement I wondered why we wouldn’t just leave it there inside. The playroom had enough space for the house and placing it inside meant we could play no matter what the weather was, hot or cold, rain or shine! It also meant I didn’t have to go inside and scan for things like wasp nests or spiders before each play time! We had spent so much time working on the basement renovation. I loved the idea that the adults had their space in the basement and now the kids would have a fun, cool space to play too!

After we had a good base coat on most of the parts, we brought the pieces into the play room and began to assemble

Once the house was assembled we spent the next few nights painting. We worked only at night after the girls went to bed so we had many last nights working on this project.

Once all of the white paint was done we took the matte black spray paint to the faucet. Once it dried we installed it and the sink and stove top.

Then we moved on to the front door. We gave the front door 3 coats of pink before it was ready to go on the house.

Next came the interior curtains I ordered these sheer panels from Amazon in pink

Then we installed the flower boxes. I already had the potted grass from IKEA but those pots did not fit the planter box holes. So I ordered these cute white pots from Amazon. They fit perfectly in the holes and I was able to place the IKEA grass right inside the pots. Then I thought how cute it would be to have a grassy space to play outside while still inside! So I ordered this AMAZING grass turf rug. I loved the look of the little grassy area next to the house behind the white picket fence. So. Cute. And then my husband says “What about a fire pit?” And of course we knew we had to run with it!

Decorating The Playhouse

This is when the fun began! I ordered these ADORABLE pink chairs from Amazon and was so disappointed when they came in and were red(Amazon no longer has the pink ones so here is the link to the red)! Amazon was amazing though and IMMEDIATELY sent me out a new set of chairs. I also ordered this adorable campfire set! I was impressed with this series when it arrived! It came with 2 stuffed “logs”, a stuffed fire, a reversible mat, a pair of bear gloves, 2 marshmallows on sticks, a felt axe, 4 graham crackers, and 2 chocolate bars! Everything you need to have a kids campfire inside with smores!

When we set it up I realized the space was too tight for 4 chairs. We decided to buy a 2nd grass turf rug and cut them to the size we wanted. These were easy to cut and then we used construction adhesive to glue the front down to the concrete so that no-one trips over it. Finally, I used my Silhouette to cut our last name in vinyl and put it on the mailbox and we hung some LED lights that we had on hand up under the roof line.

The Kids Playhouse Breakdown

Christmas morning proved this project was worth every second we spent on it! My girls loved all of it and so did the rest of the family! We had a blast playing in it! Heres the cost break down:

Grand Total $656.84

When I compare our grand total to the thousand dollar price tag of the others I looked at I’m happy we went the route we did! We got a one of a kind house that fits the style we wanted and that (most importantly) my girls love. I cant wait for them to make lifelong memories playing here.
