How We Made a Big Impact in a Small Laundry Closet

One of my favorite things to do is to makeover spaces in other people’s homes! Check out my mom’s stair renovation here! Or her pantry renovation here! One of the spaces my mom was struggling with was her small laundry closet. She struggled with making a small space beautiful and functional!

Here is the space we started with

It functioned well enough but definitely didn’t make ya want to do laundry. Simple yellow paint and builder grade wire shelving made for an uninspired space. So the goal was to create a space that was beautiful but that also functioned better then before. My mom needed folding space and some good looking storage to house detergent and such.

Beginning The Makeover

We started with green paint, molding, and faux shiplap wall paper.

Next, we added picture frame molding around the back wall/wallpaper. I found some really cute barn style light fixtures on amazon. One of the challenges we faced was there was no hard wiring to hook these lights up. We could hire an electrician to hook them up but that takes time and money and we were going for a budget build so that wasn’t a great option. We ended up ordering these cool puck lights that are directional spot lights. I used the double sided adhesive and some wire to adhere them to the light fixture.

Folding Space

Then came our biggest challenge yet. Folding space. When my mom purchased her home she opted for a top-loading washing machine. This made a countertop out of the question. Or so she thought! With a little ingenuity and creativity we came up with a solution! A door on hinges.

Now, we could have done a counter top half way just over the dryer and middle storage rack but that didn’t solve the problem of stuff falling behind and to the sides if the washing machine. And I wanted a cohesive look so I knew the counter had to go all the way across. We laid plywood across the top and secured it to the framing we previously mounted. Then cut out a hole big enough for the top of the washing machine to open then fixed hinges to it and a bracket on the left side as a stopper to keep the counter in place. Then we stained and sealed the counter with a polyurethane.

The Reveal

We decorated with a shelf and laundry room signage. I previously used my silhouette to cut out a vinyl decal for her lint basket so we left that on top of the counter. We found this adorable wall mounted dry rack at hobby lobby. And hung her laundry room wall bracket and sign at the corner!

Overall this project was fast, easy, and relatively inexpensive but made a huge impact to how this small laundry closet not only looks but also how it functions! I am so glad I could do this for her and change the way she does laundry!
