Using Curb Appeal to Update Our Big Beautiful Brick Home

The second I pulled up to our home I thought this is not the house for me! One-story. I wanted two. Brick. I hated brick. There was no curb appeal for me! When I took a second look there were some things I loved. The tree-lined driveway gave lots of privacy. I always wanted a side entry garage. A large front porch with beautiful large steps to decorate with pumpkins in the fall. I caught myself dreaming before we even walked inside. What this house could be.

Keyword – COULD. However, the exterior needed work. One of the shutters had fallen off. There was no landscaping with the exception of 2 large over grown bushes on either corner of the house. The red brick was not my style. The porch was crowded with 4 colonial-style aluminum columns. I could go on!

The most cost effective upgrade to make the biggest impact was paint. First, we removed the navy blue shutters and pressure washed the brick.

Using Paint to Update Our Curb Appeal

Then, we were ready to paint! We used Behr elastomeric paint because it’s made for brick! Here’s what it looked like after 1 coat of paint.

Painting Our Doors

Next, I painted our front door, back door, and side basement door black.

Landscaping for Better Curb Appeal

Finally, She was starting to look pretty! I was super happy with these results and knew we just needed plants.

We added 4 smaller shrub trees, some flowers, black mulch, and 2 beautiful ferns to complete the look. We removed 2 of the 4 columns on the porch. As a result, we created a more open flow to the porch.

I am so pleased with the results! This house is looking more and more like home with each DIY!
